How do I return to exercise post surgery?
Please remember the advice we give is general and not meant to be used as a substitute for professional medical or health advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you want specific advice then please seek help from your doctor or local physio.
If you are returning to your exercise program following surgery, it's important to take things slow.
First and foremost, we recommend following your in-person medical team and surgeon's orders!
They are best placed to guide your return to activity. That said, it's important to get back to exercise when safe to do so to maintain and improve your health, so make sure to have a discussion with your medical team about when you can resume cardiovascular and resistance exercise. When you are safe and ready to restart, the main thing to remember is this:
Start low, go slow!
- Start with a level that is comfortable and manageable for you and slowly build up as you become more conditioned to the exercise.
If you have any concerns or worries during exercise, the best thing is to check with your medical team.
